"Understanding School Transportation Costs and Route Planning

The district contracts with five transportation companies to provide safe and reliable transportation services for our students. Our Transportation Department works closely with these contractors throughout the entire school year to address student needs, adjust routes, and ensure efficient operations.

Each summer, district transportation staff and representatives from all five bus companies meet to carefully review every route. Together, they evaluate student ridership, school assignments, travel times, safety considerations, and route efficiency to develop the most effective transportation plan possible for the upcoming school year.

Many families wonder why school buses may sometimes appear to have only a few students on them. It is important to understand how transportation services are funded and operated within our district.

The district pays its transportation contractors based on the number of students assigned (rostered) to transportation services—not the size of the vehicle being used. Because of this, it is very important that families notify the Transportation Department if their child no longer requires bus transportation. Keeping transportation rosters accurate helps ensure the district is only paying for the services that are actually needed.

In addition, many of our buses operate double runs, meaning the same bus serves more than one school, such as a high school route followed by an elementary route. As a result, a bus that may appear to have only a few students on board during one portion of its route may actually be transporting a much larger number of students throughout the morning or afternoon.

Our Transportation Department continuously works with our transportation partners to optimize routes, maximize efficiency, and provide safe transportation for students. When evaluating transportation operations, it is important to remember that transportation costs are tied to the number of students receiving service and the largest load, not the size of the bus or the number of students visible on a particular route at any given time.
