Important Security Update: Canvas Data Breach
Armstrong School District
May 8, 2026
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Teachers,
We are writing to inform you of a recent security incident involving Instructure, the company that provides our learning platform, Canvas.
Instructure recently notified school districts nationwide that they experienced a cybersecurity breach. While they have secured their systems and are working with law enforcement, we have been informed that Armstrong School District data was not involved in this breach.
What Happened?
Instructure confirmed that unauthorized individuals accessed a limited amount of data within the Canvas system affecting some institutions.
- Information involved (in affected districts): Student names, email addresses, Canvas ID numbers, and internal Canvas messages
- What was NOT taken: There is currently no evidence that passwords, birthdates, or government ID numbers (like Social Security numbers) were affected
Based on the information provided directly by Instructure, no Armstrong School District student, staff, or family data was accessed or compromised.
What This Means for You
Although this is part of a larger nationwide incident affecting other schools, there is no indication that our district’s data, systems, or users were impacted. Our internal systems remain secure.
Action Steps: Staying Safe Online
Even though our district was not affected, we encourage all families to continue practicing good digital safety habits:
- Verify Communications: Be cautious of unexpected emails regarding your Canvas or school accounts
- Think Before You Click: Avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from unknown or unexpected senders
- Protect Your Credentials: The district or Canvas will never ask for your password or a verification code via email or text
- Report Concerns: If you receive suspicious messages, report them through our district support channels
Our Commitment
We take the security of student and staff information seriously. We will continue to monitor this situation and maintain communication with Instructure to ensure the ongoing safety of our systems.
Thank you for your continued trust and partnership in keeping our school community secure.
