Parent/Student Guide to Flexible Instruction Days
Flexible Instruction Day Parent Guide
Please review the guide below on Flexible Instructional Days (FIDs).
What is a "Flexible Instructional Day?"
- Armstrong School District has received approval to utilize "Flexible Instruction Days" as an alternate approach to delivering instruction in the event of inclement weather or other emergency that prevents in person, regularly scheduled school.
- A FID can be used instead of a "snow day" in order that teaching and learning continue without interruption and the missed school day does not need to be rescheduled.
- As of January 15, 2025 there is one available snow day makeup remaining (April 17, 2025). This day will be scheduled/used before the use of a Flexible Instruction Day.
- After the last remaining snow makeup day (April 17, 2025) is scheduled, Flexible Instruction Days will be used in the event of school cancellations due to inclement weather.
How will I know if the District is implementing a Flexible Instructional Day (FID)?
- When the Superintendent declares a FID, all families will receive communication via telephone, text message, social media, and e-mail similar to how school closings and delays are currently announced. The school day will then be conducted virtually for all students according to the two hour delay schedule.
How will attendance be taken for my student(s) on a Flexible Instruction Day?
- Recognizing that our younger students may not have much experience logging into Skyward in comparison to our older students, attendance can be recorded either by a parent/guardian OR a student logging into the Skyward Student Information System to complete the Flexible Instruction Day Attendance Form. (Skyward Use Tutorial)
- This is a simple form to indicate attendance that can be completed at any time during the Flexible Instruction Day
- Logging into Skyward:
- Parents/Guardians should use their Skyward Username and Password. At this time, if you do not have that password and cannot reset it, call your child’s school to obtain your username and password.
- Students can use the “login with Google” function (student 99 number and Google password) or login with their Skyward ID (student’s 99 number) and their Skyward password.
- If parents/guardians or students do not know their Skyward password, it can be reset using the “Forgot Your Login/Password?” function on the Skyward login page. Using this function, parents/guardians and students will receive an email sent to the parent/guardians email account of record or student’s school email account with a link to reset their password.
- The FID Attendance Form will be available on the day of the FID under the “Online Forms” menu at the left after logging into Skyward as seen below. There is a short tutorial on completing the form here also:

- Students must complete any assignments provided by their teachers via the Skyward Message Center or that have been provided beforehand in anticipation of a Flexible Instruction Day. All assignments (provided in advance or on that day) will be available in the Skyward Message Center and can be found under both Parent/Guardian and Student Logins.
- Schoolwork will be primarily asynchronous (not live) on a Flexible Instruction Day. Teachers will be available to students/parents via email for the duration of the school day.
What if my Internet does not work, I do not have Internet, or I left my device at school?
- Families experiencing problems with Internet connectivity should call the school office to report the student's attendance.
- Devices will not be required in all instances to complete lessons.
- Students are expected to engage actively on a flexible instruction day. If students are not able to access their assignment from home on a flexible instruction day, they will have 3 school days, once school resumes, to complete their learning activities. Any student who fails to complete their assignments will receive a zero on any graded assignment that was not submitted.
My child(ren) received a packet of assignments prior to the Flexible Instruction Day, do I or my student(s) still need to login into Skyward?
- Either parents/guardians OR student(s) should still login into Skyward, so their attendance can be recorded on the Flexible Instruction Day Attendance Form. In the event of downed or no Internet connectivity, student attendance should be reported to the school office by phone.
How can I contact a teacher or staff member during a flexible instruction day?
- All teachers and professional staff members will be available by email on a flexible instruction day. This includes special area teachers such as music, art, library, physical education, learning support, teachers in specialized programs, reading specialists, and school counselors, nurses, speech therapists, interventionists, and principals, unless the individual is ill that day.
Will after school activities be canceled on a flexible instruction day?
- Yes, after school activities will be canceled during a flexible instruction day.
