Bringing Educational Programming to Your Home
Education Today was formed when former Armstrong School District Superintendent Dr. William Kerr brought a show he once hosted to the school district. Education Today is sort of a spin off of a show titled Focus on Education. The show is produced in Armstrong School Districts television studio at Kittanning Junior High School. As is in the title, the show's purpose is to bring educationally valuable programming to your home and showcase the district and its students. Here at Education Today we try very hard to give an inside look of our district to the public.
Certain shows have become 'staples' for our programming from year to year, such as a show about Community Awareness Day and Drugs Kill Dreams with Ford City Magisterial District Judge J. Gary DeComo, highlights from our Teacher In-Service Day, and HEALTHY Armstrong. We also strive to air as many building level events as we can. Episodes covering assemblies, speakers and presenters, and county and district band festivals are touched upon every year. Perhaps the highlight of all of our programming comes at the end of the year when we air a series of shows that are entirely written, directed, produced, and filmed by our TV Production classes. What better way to showcase our students than that!
Education Today has seen many changes along the way since its' inception in 2004. Over the years the show has encountered 4 different set designs and two hosts. In addition, students from the TV Production classes take on the hosting responsibilities as the year progresses. In the 2015-2016 school year the entire studio was replaced when a new space was built in the Armstrong Jr. Sr. High School. This allowed the studio to be updated to a completely digital, high definition platform.
With the TV Production class growing in popularity each year, we now have a strong class of TV II students returning this year. The 2012-2013 school year marked the first year that an official TV Production II class was offered. Beginning in the 2017-2018 school year the program is expanding again, offering a series of different classes including Television Production/Broadcasting (full year), Media Studies and Film Making (full year), Media Literacy (semester), and Introduction to Television and Video Production (semester). This also marks the first year that students can become directly involved as early as their sophomore year in high school.
New in 2016 is a school district YouTube page, which contains all Education Today programming (from 16-17 forward), school board meetings, and student created work. The channel can be viewed here
With our new revamped TV Studio page there is now access to look back and see a list of every show that ever aired on Education Today, see a description of our studio and programming, view an about page of our Multi-Media Technician (who runs the site and studio), and access other information regarding the program.
